What is it?
Often regarded as poor man's shellfish, mussels are cheap and plentiful. In the wild, they grow on coastline rocks and stones but the majority of mussels available in the UK are farmed in suitable coastal waters. Mussels are one of the most environmentally sound types of fish or shellfish available. There's no hefty price tag and, what's more, these little creatures are in abundance.
Preparation Options
You can just cook mussels as they are, they might need a bit of a rinse of to remove the sand. Discard any that stay open when tapped or have cracked shells.
Is it sustainable?
Our mussels come from Fowey if they are in blue sacks, Exmouth if they are in yellow sacks, and wales if they are in black sacks. Mussel farming requires no feed inputs therefore farming of mussels is a good way of producing seafood. Also there are no chemicals used in mussel farming. As only naturally occurring spat are used for on-growing therefore escapes is not an issue.
