What is it?
Mackerel is an oily fish with plenty of omega 3 oils. It’s a stronger flavoured fish with a slightly creamy texture; it can be quite bony but not as bony as a herring. They can be grilled or baked whole, or fried in fillets. They go well with a salad or new potatoes.
Preparation Options
You can have this fish whole or in fillets. If it is whole it will need to be gutted, you can leave the head on or have it taken off. You get two fillets off each side, you can have them separated or joined at the belly giving you a butterfly fillet, or joined by the top fin this is sometimes called a cutlet.
Is it sustainable?
We get or mackerel from Looe, we prefer to get line caught but on the odd occasion these are not available we have to get netted ones. The MCS gives line caught mackerel a rating of 2 meaning they are sustainable but improvements could still be made. Netted ones are given a rating of 3 meaning you can eat them from time to time but not enough research has been done to class them as fully sustainable.
