What is it?
Herring is an oily fish rich in protein and vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial to health. They can grow up to 40cm/16in in length. Whole herrings can be poached, fried or grilled, or pickled, soused, marinated, salted and smoked.
Preparation Options
You can have a herring headed and gutted, they sometimes contain roe which is also edible. You can also have them filleted, the fillets will still contain pin bones.
Is it sustainable?
Our herrings come from Looe, the MCS doesn't have any information about the sustainability of this but herrings caught using the same methods in other areas are very sustainable.
